evey the barber “Her own success”

Twist and turns with some ups and downs on the side may sound like the ultimate recipe for life but most of it is a part of life, we are faced with many life changing moments that it can become overwhelming. It is how we handle these moments that become a part of us with that comes character in the case of Evey her determination and passion for this industry is unmatched
and cannot be measured. From wanting to cut everyone’s hair to now having everyone wanting their haircut done by Evey has been truly a dream Evey knew one day would come to fruition.
With Evey’s no quit attitude and her drive for success she has found her place amongst the many queens of this industry owing all that she is and has become to her king her father who passed down
so many teachings that standing on your own two feet will never let you fall… Taking all those lessons Evey has learned that “behind every successful woman is herself”

At the age of 10yrs old I was always fascinated with doing someone’s hair in my family. I come from a big family, 7 brothers and 3 sisters. I would always ask my father “can I comb your hair”, or bother my sister by braiding her hair. But it wasn’t until the age of 13yrs old that my father asked me to shape the back of his neck up with a pair of clippers, when I was done and he looked in the mirror and said wow! you really did a good job. I think at that point I became obsessed with wanting to cut hair. So I started to beg my brothers to let me cut their hair but they weren’t having it. So I practiced on my little brother by giving him a flat top with the razor my mom shaved her legs with and a pair of scissors, it wasn’t my best work, but it wasn’t to bad either, let me just say, I was on punishment for two weeks for not asking permission to cut his hair. So at the age of 14 my father surprised me with my first pair of Andis clippers. I still remember till this day what he said when he handed me the clippers, he said “ Im giving you these clippers because I see you have a natural talent and really love cutting hair, But in order for me to give you these clippers today you have to promise to always ask me first if someone wants you to cut their hair, and I have to be your first client.” I’m standing there with my eyes opened wide like yes daddy I promise.

That’s when the game changed for me. At the age of 15 &16 I was good enough to be cutting my older brothers and some cousins and even some of my friends at school. But it wasn’t until one year when it was time to go back to school that neighborhood kids started knocking on my door for back to school cuts. Mind you I’ve never been paid for a cut until then. I made enough money to even pay for my own school clothes. It was at that time that I realized I wanted to make this my career. But at the age of 18 yrs old I got pregnant, and was Married a year later and things changed for me, but my passion for cutting hair was always in me. I kept it as hobby and just something to do when my sons needed a cut or someone knocked on my door for a cut. But It wasn’t until I got divorced that I decided to finally follow my dreams and passion for cutting, so I moved back to NY from Maryland it was hard starting over from scratch but I was determined to make it. I was connected with one of my good friends till this day (Timothy smith ) he owned a barber shop and took me under his wing and showed me what it takes to work in a barbershop. He showed me a lot and believed in me. Tim always told me go get your License, if it wasn’t for Tim I would have quit a long time ago.

So with that being said, I met Chris Rodriguez from LibI and he pushed me to become a master barber. It wasn’t easy being around all these men all day but I learned I have thick skin. So I decided to brand myself and take pics of my work and post it on Instagram. Eric from Barbershopconnect reached out to me and posted one of my pics and helped me to network with other barbers. I was so impressed by the work I seen from other barbers and just how far you can go in this industry that I was in love with it all over again. My biggest influence was my father first and for most, I’m also influenced by Curtis Smith he inspires me to do more and always looks out for me. Danny (successaddict) is another beast in this industry that inspires me and always encourages me to do better. I have a long way to go in this industry and it’s only the beginning for me. I’m not where I want to be yet, but at least I’m nowhere near where I use to be. If I could go back and tell the younger me anything, I would say give your daddy the BIGGEST HUG and tell him thank you for setting you up for life, because as long as you have two hands two legs and good eyes to see out of you will always be able to take care of yourself. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t thank my father. “behind every successful woman is herself.”
