The Barber’s View: Kids

Kids, kids, kids and more kids the one topic most barbers tend to shy away from.
The BIG question is Why? Why do some barbers always have “somewhere” to go? or “something “ to do? when a parent walks into the barbershop with 1 to 4 little boys veering in age.
Yet some barbers always find the time to jump up for a cut on a young child only when finding the mother to be attractive in hopes and with intention to talk with the mother.
Why do some barbers judge a book by it’s cover? Because most barbers would rather not deal with children in their chair they’d rather make easy money and chase after internet fame.
I for one look at these young children as future clients not every child is a bad one some may have experience a horrible visit with another barber has left the child scarred when it comes to getting a haircut.
The key to cutting kids is to comfort them remember they are children new sounds, sights and feelings may be a bit much and could intimidate them.
(Here are some tips for any barber struggling when it comes to cutting kids.)
1. Talk to them (ask them questions)
2. Dust them off constantly (itchiness leads to movement)
3. Water down your alcohol before applying (the burn might scare them)
4. Use a phone or tablet keep them entertained
5. Reward them after the haircut with a lollipop (remind them throughout of the prize)

Every kid and every cut will only get better with time you must be patient and understand.
To the parents please and I repeat please be realistic when it comes to wanting or choosing the haircut for your child. Sometimes as barbers we do what we can and we cannot beat ourselves up when it comes to cutting children they’ll eventually grow up because at the end of the day we all just want to provide the best experience and give the greatest of services to everyone.

I hope you enjoy this read and hope it helps.
